What editor do I use?

14th March 2008, 534 views

A few people have recently asked about the PHP editor I use. I use Scite. Why? Because it's fast and unobtrusive, and still extremely powerful if you want it to be (oh and not that it makes any odds to me, but it's multi-platform too). It's not directed at PHP either - being a generic text editor you can use it for all languages. Oh and it's free. Which helps.

I've used Notepad2 in the past which is a slimmed down version of Scintilla/Scite. I found that very good.

I've been giving Notepad++ a try for the past month or so. Again it is good but I wouldn't say it was any better.

I'm a PHP developer at heart, but now use .NET in my day job. I've got kind of used to some of the nicer features of Visual Studio (and there are a few decent ones, believe it or not).

I use EditPlus for PHP and have done for years (decent wrapping, syntax colouring etc). However, recently I've starting experimenting with fuller-blown IDEs, like Eclipse with PDT (ok so far), VS.PHP (maybe worth another look in the future) etc. Looking at Zend Studio too. So far Eclipse has been the only thing to take me away from EditPlus for any significant time.

I have used vim for a long time, but when i changed my distro to ubutu from gentoo, i stopped using console apps. So i switched Gedit, the default text editor in gnome. With gedit's plugin support, it can do anything. Gedit is the best editor or even best ide i use.

Zend Studio, I want it's babies.

Work pays for it though, without that I wouldn't really know where to turn. Thx for the alternatives to try :)

Back in the days when I was using Windows I used EditPlus. I tried a lot of different ones and it was the most pleasant one. Now that I've switched to OS X, the answer is obvious, I'm using TextMate. It's the best editor I've ever used, hands down. vi is great too, I'm using it all the time as well, especially when editing over SSH.
