Font sizes

18th March 2008, 270 views

Just trying to read this, and since it uses a tiny font (8.3pt I believe), I hit the font size button in Internet Explorer. No effect. Because it uses point sizing instead of percentages (for example), Internet Explorer won't resize it. Eg:

Point sized text

Pixel sized text

Percentage sized text

Use your browser to resize the text and the red text will remain the same size (10pt / 10px), whereas the green text (using percentages) will change accordingly.

In summary, if you're concerned at all about usability then use a relative font sizing, eg percentages.

Hi.

This is a quick check using

Internet Explorer - 7.0.5730.11
Firefox - 2.0.0.12
Opera - 9.26
Safari - 3.0.4 (523.15)
Firefox IEView - 1.3.7
Firefox IETab - 1.3.3.20070528

All on Windows XP SP2.

I use CTRL/MouseWheel or CTRL/+, CTRL/- to resize my text.

Here is what I have observed.

IE - Text, Images, Scrollbars resize (full page zoom).
FF - Test resize.
Opera - Text, Images resize (full page zoom)
Safari - Text resizes.
IEView/IETab - No change.

Using the text size option from the menu.

IE - No change.
FF - Text resizes.
Opera - Text, Images resize (full page zoom).
Safari - Text resizes.
IEView/IETab - No change.

The zoom is nice, but why on earth are the scroll bars included?

Overall, I think Opera performs the best in this little test as I like the idea of a zoom more than just bigger letters.

Really? Guess it must have been "fixed" for IE7.

I suppose if you have difficulty seeing text then you probably would also have difficulty seeing/using the scrollbars. They're not exactly huge.

Agreed, but I really don't get on with Opera. In fact the only reason I have it (and FireFox) installed is for testing purposes.

I use FireFox with Firebug as my main development. Use IEView/IETab for testing with IE and those sites which REALLY don't understand anything but IE. Use Safari/Opera for testing only.

I like FireFox because with Adblockplus and noscript, I feel I'm pretty secure and I am in control. With IE, I just don't feel I am. Especially as WSUS seems to keep resetting our internet and intranet zones.

Richard.

Why, what sort of sites do you frequent? :-)

Mainly the ones that don't work are Microsoft sites. I suspect it is me, but ...

Some sites have really poor CSS/layout which IE renders better.

If I get a site which fails to render properly (maybe the JS code isn't aware of any standard and just uses IE's way), then 1 click on the status bar and I'm reading it in IE inside FF.

Now I'm admitting ignorance, Is this "Firefox IEView"?

Yes it is.

Normally I have a little FF icon in the status bar. I can click it and get IE instead.

I can even say that site X must always load as IE whilst still inside FF.

Very useful.
